UGANDA, Jinja | Real Muoodi News | Allegations that Ministry of Tourism has terminated a contract with Roko Construction Ltd for the Jinja-based Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (UHTTI) have been making the rounds on the media. However, Roko Construction spokesperson, Bernard Muhangi, refutes these claims. Muhangi says the allegations of shoddy work and that construction progress is only at 50 per cent are not true.

“It’s really very disturbing to note that a building whose electricals, finishes and civil works are complete is at 50%. This is not a standard engineering measure; it’s absolutely not true that progress is at 50%,” Muhangi said.

“Current progress is at 90% and the consultants’ progress reports to the client can clarify this,” he adds.

“Notably, the client had secured funds for Phase 1 which made up the construction of the hotel block, a demonstration kitchen, laundry house, gate houses, power house, external works and electrical reticulation, garbage collection house and mechanical reticulation. Roko is currently finalising phase one works and the remaining 10% of the works shall be deferred to the additional second floor works,” said Muhangi.

He also noted that Roko would never compromise quality.

“It is our core value, it’s what we stand for. Roko is ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management Systems) certified. Our team of consultants are professionals and haven’t raised any red flags about the quality of the work,” he said.

He adds, “Saying that the building being of poor quality is utterly false as there are always processes of getting samples, approvals, and test reports for whatever material is installed or fixed.”

Muhangi says, “There are always quality checks made for all the structural components and finishes, as well as services on this project. We condemn such statements that are intended to tarnish Roko’s reputation in the market.”

Muhangi also clarified that they had challenges because of the pandemic. However, this did not affect the quality of the work.

“There were delays in completion for which extension of time claims were evaluated and granted accordingly. Extensions are never granted without good contractual reasons,” he said.

When asked about statements made by one Benson Blasi, Muhangi explicitly stated that Roko Construction has no working relationship with Benson Blasi.

“Blasi has never worked for Roko and can’t represent the company’s interests. This is fraudulent and intended to spoil our reputation. We condemn and demand that such statements with ill intentions targeting Roko with no basis and facts be retracted immediately,” he said.
