UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | Greater Kampala has a booming population of 6,709,900 people. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa. The Greater Kampala metropolitan area consists of the city proper and the neighboring districts of Wakiso, Mukono, Mpigi, Buikwe and Luweero.

Infrastructure developments have contributed to Kampala’s rapid growth. The buildings listed below are among Kampala’s tallest buildings based on standard height measurements.

Pearl of Africa Hotel

Estimated Height: 300 ft

Pearl of Africa Hotel is one of Kampala’s fancy and luxury steads on Nakesoro Hill, seated on a 14-acre site with an elevation of approximately 1,240 meters above sea level.

It is one of the tallest structures in Uganda’s capital city, with an estimated construction cost of US$150 million (approximately 350 billion Ugandan Shillings). The Pearl of Africa Hotel has 24 floors and a ballroom measuring 740 square meters, nine meeting rooms, two boardrooms, and a business centre with five restaurants.

Uganda Revenue Authority Tower

Estimated Height: 261 ft

The Uganda Revenue Authority Tower is the new home of the URA, the government agency in charge of enforcing, assessing, collecting, and accounting taxes.

The skyscraper building was built between 2015 and 2019 and measures 26,000 square meters. It has 22 floors that house over 1,700 employees and has parking for 1,070 cars, 360 of which park underground. The estimated construction cost of the URA tower is US$38 million (approximately 139 billion Ugandan Shillings) and with an estimated height of 80m. 

Crested Towers

Estimated Height: 237 ft

The National Housing and Construction Company Limited (NHCCL), Uganda’s largest government construction company, owns the Crested Towers, including the tall and short buildings.

Crested Towers were built in 1970, with the tallest tower having 20 floors and the shortest tower having 12 floors. The building has a floor area of 378 square meters and 278 parking spaces. The estimated height of Stanbic Bank north tower is 72 meters.

Crested Towers is worth 597,850,311 Ugandan shillings and houses notable tenants such as Stanbic Bank, the European Union Delegation, and Uganda Limited.

Worker’s House

Estimated Height: 237 ft

Worker’s House was constructed between 2015 and 2018. The 20-story building serves as the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) headquarters, a quasi-government agency responsible for collecting, safekeeping, investing and distributing retirement funds to private-sector employees.

The building is a government agency’s real estate holdings, with an estimated cost of 3.5 billion Ugandan Shillings (approximately US$1 million).

Mapeera House

Estimated Height: 225 ft

Mapeera House is in the heart of Kampala and comprises 17,000 square meters (180,000 square feet) of office space and 16,000 square meters (170,000 square feet) of underground parking space, which can accommodate up to 100 cars. 

The building serves as the headquarters of Centenary bank. Its estimated height is 69m. 

Roko Construction Limited, a Ugandan construction company was contracted to construct the building at an estimated cost of approximately US$30 million (USh75 billion).

Cham Towers

Estimated Height: 190 ft

The 16-story building was previously owned by Uganda Commercial Bank (UCB) before being sold to real estate mogul Karim Hirji. The shopping mall has a gross area of 9,600 square meters, a floor area of 2,900 square meters, and a renovated basement parking. Karim Hirji is said to have spend $8m (sh14b) on his renovations of the building in 2005. 

Uganda House

Estimated Height: 190 ft

Uganda House, with an estimated height of 57.83m, was built between 1969 and 1980. The Milton Obote Foundation owns and operates the 16-story building, which houses the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) headquarters.

Janani Luwum Church House

Estimated Height: 178 ft

The Janani Luwum Church House was built between 2011 and 2018, with an estimated cost of 40.75 billion Uganda Shillings (US$16.3 million), but the ultimate price was much higher because of delays and overruns.

The Church of Uganda owns this 15-story building, but Equity Bank provided 70 per cent financing as a mortgage.

Kampala Sheraton Hotel

Estimated Height: 166 ft

The Kampala Sheraton Hotel first opened its doors in 1965 as the Apollo Hotel, and it was renamed Sheraton Hotel in 1991 after extensive renovations, which cost close to $24m (sh44.3b). The height of the five-star 14-story building is estimated to be 52 meters.

Imperial Royale Hotel

Estimated Height: 166 ft

Because of its location on Kintu Road on Nakasero Hill, the Imperial Royale Hotel is surrounded by Kampala’s most affluent neighbourhoods. The building served as a media centre during Kampala’s 2007 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

The Imperial Royale Hotel is a 14-story building with an estimated height of 51 meters, with a ballroom.

Diamond Trust Bank Building

Estimated Height: 166 ft

The 14 story building is estimated to have a height of 51 meters and was completed in 1970. It serves as the headquarters of Diamond Trust Bank.

Communication House

Estimated Height: 166 ft

The National Social Security Funding (NSSF) owns this building. It was completed in 1999 and has an estimated height of 51 meters with 14 floors above ground.

NIC Building

Estimated Height: 166 ft

The building, also known as the National Insurance Company (NIC), houses NIC offices. The NIC building is estimated to be 51 meters tall and 14 stories above ground.

Friendship Apartments

Estimated Height: 142.29 ft

The residential construction finished in 2019, with an estimated height of 43.40 meters and a 12-story building.

IPS Building

Estimated Height: 136 ft

The building is estimated to be 41.45 meters tall, ten floors above ground, and is a subsidiary of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development. The Industrial Promotion Services (IPS) building’s construction began in the early 1960s and was completed in 1972.

Kingdom Kampala

Estimated Height: 131 ft

The building has 11 floors above ground and an estimated height of 39.78 meters. It sits on a 14-acre site, and they completed the construction of the mall in 2019.

EABD Building

Estimated Height: 131 ft

This building houses the East African Development Bank’s offices after its construction was completed in 2013. It stands 39.78 meters tall and has 11 floors above ground.

Course View Towers

Estimated Height: 118.58 ft

This is a ten-story building with an estimated height of 36.17 meters. It was completed in 2017. It was built for an estimated cost of US$20 million, and it sits on 1 acre of land with enough underground space to accommodate 250 parked cars.

Georgian House

Estimated Height: 118.58 ft

Also known as Amamu House, it is primarily an office building with an estimated height of 36.17 meters and ten floors above ground.

The buildings listed above are not the only ones that are part of the skyscraper category; there are also projects under construction such as;

Kampala Intercontinental Hotel

Estimated Height: 34 floors

The development is expected to include a 34-story hotel tower with 250 rooms, a conference centre with space for over 3,000 delegates, parking for approximately 1,500 cars, and 90,000 square meters of retail and office space.

Movement House

Estimated Height: 27 floors

It is currently under construction in Kampala, next to crested towers. The building will house the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) party headquarters, and its preliminary construction cost is estimated to be 30 billion Ugandan Shillings.

Pension Towers

Estimated Height: 32 floors

It is an interconnected tower that has been under construction since 2008, with a 32-story central tower and ten-story towers on either side. The three buildings are estimated to be 75,000 square meters, with parking for approximately 500 cars.
