Building Collapsed at Nytil Factory in Buikwe Killing One Person

UGANDA, Buikwe | Real Muloodi News | A 25-year-old man died after an old building collapsed on him. The building was at the Nyanza Textile Industries Limited (NYTIL) factory in Njeru Municipality in Buikwe District.

Police identified the deceased as Sanday Buni, a resident of UEB Village in Njeru central division, Buikwe district. Sanday had been hired to tear down the old building when the incident happened last week.

The Ssezibwa region police spokesperson, ASP Hellen Butoto, explained that the deceased was demolishing a certain wall in the factory premises which later collapsed and killed him.

According to Butoto, Sanday’s father, who is also a casual worker at the factory, fainted after learning about the death of his son. He was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

“It is true, there has been an industrial accident and Mr Sanday Buni, a casual worker, died while on duty. A building collapsed on him and he died. Police took him to Jinja referral hospital mortuary for postmortem. However, his father, who is also a worker in the factory, fainted after knowing that his son had died and they also rushed him to Jinja referral hospital for treatment,” ASP Butoto said.

Ms Jennifer Aletiru, a relative of the deceased, appealed to Nytil management to help with the burial expenses since Sanday died on their premises.

“The police just brought the body and dumped it here in the mortuary. We come from Arua and we do not have money to travel to Buikwe. We need Nytil to support us because this boy has died while working for them,” Ms Aletiru said.

The press attempted to talk to the management of Nytil but failed after they denied them access to the factory.

Nytil textile is the largest integrated textile industry in Uganda. The factory has facilities for spinning, colouring, weaving, and tailoring.
