UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | Talking about living a muloodi life in Uganda, look no further than Captain George Mike Mukula’s residence. It gives you a relatively wonderful picture of what it means to live like a true royal in the pearl of Africa.
The National Resistance Movement Vice-Chairperson-Eastern Region who is also the former State Minister of Health (2001-2006) and former Soroti Municipality Member of Parliament, Captain George Mike Mukula lives in an enormous multi-million mansion in Bugolobi Kampala, Luthuli Avenue.
The great crib has spacious rooms with beautiful furniture, a well-equipped gym and a swimming pool. You can say, “The place looks like a king’s castle.”
Mrs Gladys Mukula, the captain’s wife, says she last furnished their house 16 years ago, and it doesn’t need an update because the house still looks as good as new. She imported most of the furniture from Italy and Dubai.
“The things we wanted then were not here for we had to do the shopping abroad, but now many are on the market imported from China,” Mrs Mukula says.
However, she notes that if she had to do it all over again, she would go to the furniture shops in Uganda, such as Nina Interiors, Footsteps Furnishers, and Fancy Furnishers. Everything is now available in Kampala, unlike 16 years ago.
To keep up with modern trends, Mrs Mukula says she changes her drapes and curtains every five years with the help of Susan Kamya, owner of Needle Line.
According to Mrs Mukula, although she imported her bathroom ware from Italy, whenever she needs a replacement, she buys it from UMA show grounds in Lugogo.
The last time she renovated her bathroom, it cost about USh 8m. The bathroom has an electric shower fitted with a working music system.
Capt. Mike Mukula’s Life
In 2006, Capt. Mike Mukula was accused of embezzling Global Fund money and sent to jail. However, he was exonerated in 2013 when the Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court of Uganda acquitted Capt. Mukula of all charges.
Although many Ugandans believe the former minister’s house was built using Global Fund money, in fact, the residence was his family home 16 years before his ministerial appointment.
The captain clarifies how he accumulated his riches before joining politics. He has been a hardworking man since his childhood.
The Humble Beginnings of Capt. Mike Mukula
Born in a humble family in Soroti, Eastern Uganda, Teso sub-region in 1956, Capt. Mike Mukula endured a lot of hardship while growing up.
Mukula was raised by a single mother and passed through a furnace to reach where he is now. He used to sell mandazi for school fees and could go days without food, which motivated him to work hard.
While growing up, he also worked as a houseboy for the late Hajji Nasser Ntege Ssebagala’s family. His responsibilities included driving the kids to school, washing their cars, and ironing their clothes, among other house chores.
Mukula’s dream of becoming a pilot came true while working as a houseboy. Hajji Ssebagala and his wife financed his education and sponsored his career as a pilot in Nairobi. From Nairobi, he went to Texas, America for further studies.
According to the captain, he used this opportunity to do kyeyo in the United States. He worked odd jobs like selling ice cream, which enabled him to save some money while he completed his pilot’s training in the States.
When he returned from the US as a professional pilot in the early 80s, he used his savings to import his first car from Japan, which he sold later for a considerable profit.
Mukula used the profit to order four more cars and started his ice cream shop called Bimbo Ice Cream in Uganda.
Later in the 1980’s Capt. Mukula became President Yoweri Museveni’s personal pilot.
Mukula‘s Involvement in the Real Estate and Hospitality Industry
Mukula continued to work hard, accumulating and saving enough money to build his first house in Bugolobi, which he later rented out to an Indian tenant. Together with a Chinese partner, he established the first Chinese restaurant in Uganda, the China Palace restaurant.
Mukula runs several personal businesses in and around Kampala that keep cash flowing in his pockets. He currently employs about 2000 people in his various businesses.
His businesses include Uganda Aviation School, Soroti Hotel, a radio station in Teso and a tour travel agency, among others.
The captain advises the young generation never to underestimate a job as long as you can earn something. You can move from grass to grace if you are focused.
