UGANDA, Kitugu | Real Muloodi News | During the commemoration of St. Janani Luwum Day, Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu of the Church of Uganda issued a stern caution to individuals involved in land grabbing, particularly concerning church land, emphasising the potential consequences of such actions.
Speaking at the 47th anniversary event held at St. Janani Luwum’s burial site in Wii-gweng Village, Mucwini Parish, Kitgum District on February 16, 2024, Archbishop Kaziimba stressed the sanctity of church land and urged respect for its rightful use.
“Don’t steal God’s land. You are fighting God to contend with you. Those in charge of Church land put it to good use,” admonished Kaziimba during his address at the commemoration.
The event, dedicated to honouring the legacy of St. Janani Luwum, the former Archbishop who was tragically murdered by the late President Idi Amin in 1977, served as a platform for Archbishop Kaziimba to bless and commission the St. Janani Development Committee, led by Canon Justice James Ogoola.
In his remarks, Kaziimba underscored the significance of service and development within the church, calling for individuals who are Faithful, Available, and Teachable (FAT) to participate actively in the advancement of church properties.
Amidst the commemoration, Lamwaka Margaret Odwar, the representative of Chua East in Kitgum District, expressed gratitude to the Church for facilitating the event and raised concerns about ongoing challenges faced by the community, including threats from Karimojong cattle rustlers and the destruction of crops by elephants from Murchison Falls National Park.
In response, the Minister for Internal Affairs, Kahinda Otafiire, proposed a strategy involving the use of long-horn Ankole cattle as bait to deter cattle rustlers from the Acholi region and Karamoja.
