UGANDA, Lira | Real Muloodi News | One person was killed in the wee hours of Wednesday 21st December 2022 in Lira City, when part of a commercial building that he was keeping watch over collapsed on him.
A portion of the Blue Valley Guest House on Olwol Road collapsed at 2:00 a.m., crushing the man to death.
The deceased has been identified as Godfrey Otwii, who was a night watchman at the building.
The structure is one of dozens that have been condemned in the city, according to a police officer who wished to remain unnamed.
Richard Olila, the proprietor of the guest house, is being detained by Lira City Police at Lira Central Police Station in connection with the death of his night watchman.
Otwii’s colleagues retrieved his lifeless body from the rubble. The Police Fire and Rescue services later took the body to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for an autopsy.
Joseph Bakaleke, the East Division Commander of the City Police, who was present at the site, declined to comment on the event.
Reporters were directed to Jimmy Patrick Okema, a spokesman for the Kyoga Region Police, who was unavailable.
Mohammed Dhakobe, who operates a carpentry shop on the premises, said the deceased, whom he described as a nice person, had worked with him for over ten years as a night watchman and washing bay attendant.
Regional Police fire and rescue officer Florence Amukia stated that several structures in Lira City should be demolished.
According to Amukia, a member of the housing committee, they notified the owners of the decaying structures but all in vain.
