Building Collapses in Bweyogerere, Police Searching for Site Engineer

UGANDA, Bweyogerere | Real Muloodi News | A storeyed building under construction along the Kampala-Jinja highway in Bweyogerere collapsed at around 4:00pm yesterday.

URN had initially reported that the incident left five people injured. However Kampala deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire later clarified “No death or injuries were registered, the site engineer is however on the run.”

There were over 20 workers on the site at the time of the collapse, who had begun working on the second floor.

“They probably knew it was going to collapse anytime. I am told they were pouring slab for the next floor and it started to show signs of collapse, they all stopped working and got off the building and watched from a distance as their shoddy work collapsed,” Owoyesigyire said.

Amis Kagezi, the Chairperson Kireku-Railway zone in Bweyogerere Division, said construction had been ongoing day and night.

Kagezi conjectured that the building could have caved in due to hurried building and poor materials used in construction, and confirmed they were still trying to establish the identity of the building proprietor and his engineers.

This is the second building to collapse within the greater Kampala Metropolitan Area within the last three months. In September, six people were killed after a building collapsed in Kisenyi. In November, a 25-year-old man died when a building collapsed on him at the Nyanza Textile Industries Limited (NYTIL) factory in Njeru Municipality in Buikwe District.
