UGANDA, Fort Portal | Real Muloodi News | In a significant move aimed at improving cleanliness and sanitation, Fort Portal City has phased out open garbage dumping sites.

Areas that were previously notorious for open garbage dumping, such as Njara, Hakabale, Kitumba, Kinubi, Kabegira, and Kisenyi, have now been cleaned up, and warning signposts against illegal waste disposal have been erected.

City Clerk Perez Mwebesa of Fort Portal Central Division emphasised the need for proper solid waste disposal and announced that residents are now expected to individually manage the waste they generate until designated garbage trucks arrive for collection.

“People are supposed to keep their garbage until the trucks come to collect it on specified days of the week,” Mwebesa stated.

Furthermore, Fort Portal City has adopted a “polluter pay” policy to ensure that those who generate garbage take responsibility for its proper disposal.

“A very small and affordable fee is being charged to anyone generating garbage to cover the cost of disposal,” Mwebesa explained.

However, city authorities have expressed their disappointment as some individuals continue to dump solid waste at unauthorised locations.

“Due to the poor mindset of some of our residents, they persist in dumping garbage in unapproved areas, which tarnishes the city’s appearance,” said Central Division Mayor Richard Muhumuza.

Muhumuza emphasised that waste management is a shared responsibility between the government and citizens, calling on residents to be agents of change.

He highlighted the current use of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) approach for solid waste management in the city.

This holistic effort underscores the importance of community engagement and personal responsibility in maintaining a cleaner and more sanitary environment within Fort Portal City.
