UGANDA, Kiryandongo | Real Muloodi News | In a bid to enhance local revenue performance, the Kiryandongo District local government has officially inaugurated the Integrated Revenue Administration System (IRAS). This online revenue collection system aims to streamline the taxpayer registration, assessment, and payment processes, enabling direct transactions with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) through banks or mobile money.

Martin Jacan Gwokto, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Kiryandongo, emphasised the district’s historical struggle in local revenue performance.

Gwokto expressed optimism that the implementation of IRAS would lead to substantial improvements in revenue collection, subsequently enhancing budget performance in the current and upcoming financial years.

Edith Aliguma Adyeri, the Kiryandongo District chairperson, welcomed the introduction of IRAS, considering it long overdue.

Adyeri believes that the new system will enable the district to meet revenue targets and allocate funds to priority areas effectively.

Addressing the existing challenges, the district chairperson acknowledged the porous nature of the current revenue collection system, characterised by inadequate reporting.

To address this issue, Jonathan Akweteireho, the Kiryandongo Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), urged parish chiefs and revenue officers to embrace the IRAS positively. He emphasised that the new system would deter the misuse of government funds.

Akweteireho highlighted the government’s strategic goals, emphasising the need for an integrated electronic database and system for all Ugandans and government programs.

He, along with other district leaders, committed to conducting awareness campaigns to educate taxpayers about the benefits of the new system, fostering compliance.

In the approved budget estimates, Kiryandongo District aims to collect 1.5 billion shillings from various revenue sources.

The launch of IRAS in Kiryandongo received support from the Local Government Finance Commission, which oversees the revenue and budget performance of districts, cities, and municipalities.
