UGANDA, Soroti | Real Muloodi News | In Soroti City East Division, residents have submitted a petition to their Teso leaders, urging an investigation into the alleged encroachment on land designated for Moruapesur Primary School.
According to Mr Moses Echuru, the chairperson of the Parents’ and Teachers’ Association (PTA) of Moruapesur Primary School, the school was established in 1988 with land donated by the late Cuthbert Obwangor, a former Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
However, the land allocated for the school has reportedly been occupied by internally displaced persons (IDPs) who refuse to vacate despite the original purpose of the land.
Mr Echuru highlighted that the contested schoolland is surrounded by four roads, namely Eretu, Prof Opolot, Omaria, and Erukana Road.
Allegations suggest that 27 IDPs from nearby communities, particularly from Owalei, Opiro, and Acetgwen villages, are claiming ownership of the land.
Mr. Echuru also accused city authorities of facilitating the subdivision of the eastern part of the school land for the benefit of the accused individuals.
He called for immediate action to safeguard the school’s land and urged Members of Parliament, parents, and other stakeholders to initiate an inquiry into the matter.
Mr. Paul Omer, the mayor of Soroti City East Division, disclosed that the issue was brought before the court, but the judge referred it back to the local community for resolution.
He urged city authorities to collaborate with the Attorney General and witnesses to expedite the legal process and secure the land.
Mr Omer cautioned against any attempts to bribe witnesses and encouraged elderly individuals familiar with the land to come forward as witnesses.
Ms. Josephine Akello, the Chairperson of the School Management Committee, emphasised the importance of community support in preserving the school’s land.
She underscored the significance of education for their children’s future and urged leaders to assist if the matter returns to court due to procedural irregularities.
Ms. Joan Alobo, the Soroti City Woman Member of Parliament, dismissed the claims of those seeking to encroach on the school land as unrealistic.
She called for the involvement of law enforcement agencies to investigate the actions of the individuals involved.
Additionally, Ms. Alobo advocated for community education and empowerment regarding land matters to prevent future land grabs.
