UGANDA, Lango | Real Muloodi News | State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, has officially announced plans for the construction of Akii Bua Stadium in Lira.

The stadium, known as the home of Lango Province, is set to undergo significant development, with construction slated to commence soon.

Akii Bua Stadium gained attention after being selected as one of the venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations following East Africa’s successful joint bid.

However, concerns arose within football circles about the stadium’s readiness for such a prestigious event.

Minister Ogwang shared the news of the stadium’s reconstruction through his official communication platform, stating that the project would be completed within 22 months.

“Plans to construct Akii Bua Stadium in Lira City have been finalised, after we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Joint Venture of Khator Sports and SAMCO to construct the stadium in less than 20 months,” Minister Ogwang announced.

He elaborated on the financing model for the project, stating, “The Contractor will finance and build the Stadium through a pre-finance basis. This sports infrastructure is a critical project in our preparations to host the 2027 AFCON, and therefore, it will be fast-tracked for its timely completion.”

The promise of reconstructing Akii Bua Stadium dates back to 2010 when President Museveni pledged its construction.

However, until now, the realisation of this promise has remained elusive.

Following the successful joint bid by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Akii Bua Stadium was identified as a potential venue for the tournament alongside other stadiums in the region.

Significant progress has already been made in the redevelopment of Nakivubo Stadium, while construction at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, is nearing completion. Additionally, St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende has been earmarked as one of the training facilities for AFCON 2027.

Minister Ogwang expressed gratitude to President Museveni and Minister of Education and Sports, First Lady Janet Museveni, for their role in identifying the contractor for the Akii Bua Stadium reconstruction project, signalling a step forward in the enhancement of sports infrastructure in the region.
