Real Muloodi Haruna Comes to the Rescue of Street Vendors Amid KCCA Crackdown

UGANDA, Kampala Real Muloodi News | KCCA has announced tough new measures aimed at keeping street vendors off Kampala’s sidewalks. Meanwhile, Real Muloodi Haruna Sentongo steps in to help.

Mr Hussein Hudu, the Kampala Residence City Commissioner (RCC), has described the new restrictions targeted at preventing street vendors from selling on the verandas of city arcades.

Among the new measures, Mr Hudu explains that the government has delegated the duty for maintaining a vendor-free city to landlords and owners of buildings and shops.

“Shop owners, arcade owners as well as managers and business owners shall be left with the responsibility to keep street vendors off of the verandas of their buildings,” the RCC announced.

“Police and other security agencies including KCCA enforcement have been doing a commendable job of keeping them off the streets. However, we are now shifting the responsibility of getting street venders off the verandas and streets to landlords, shop owners and managers of buildings, because we have noticed that a section of them connive with some vendors to be allowed to operate on verandas. Once vendors are found outside any building or in front of any shop, that building will be closed,” Mr Hudu said.

Last December, the RCC declared that street sellers will no longer be permitted in central Kampala, citing an order from President Museveni to “make Kampala a lot more habitable, safe, and magnificent city.”

This year, joint military and police operations began to clear the city streets of sidewalk merchants.

“I want to thank the hawkers and street vendors for cooperating to leave the streets,” We all agree that Kampala looks better without street vending. This is the vision of His Excellency the President,” Mr Hudu said.

The RCC urged the affected sellers to seek out the vacant booths currently available at the Usafi market.

Meanwhile, Haruna Towers billionaire Haruna Ssentongo has stepped in to offer up to 300 stalls to the evicted street vendors in his two markets in Kisenyi and Mengo, free of charge for the next six months.

In light of the real estate muloodi’s generous offer, Mr Hudu informed vendors that issues of working space cease to be an excuse now.
