UGANDA, Masindi | Real Muloodi News | In response to the heightened risk of floods along the Masindi-Kampala Highway, security authorities in Masindi District have issued an urgent directive, ordering residents to vacate the road reserve near River Kafu by next Tuesday 19th December 2023.
Last month, River Kafu overflowed, causing significant damage to properties in several villages, including Karangwe, Kayera, Miyeba, Karwara, Kibanja, Kabogoba, Kingungulu, Nyakarongo, and Kididima, all situated in Kimengo Sub County.
Masindi’s Resident District Commissioner, Mr. Emmy Ngabirano, emphasised the critical nature of the evacuation, aligning it with the implementation of a presidential directive aimed at safeguarding people living in wetlands.
Those residing along Masindi-Kampala Highway Road and the river banks of Kafu are specifically targeted by this evacuation order.
Mr. Jacob Chepsikor, Masindi District Police Commander, clarified that the evacuation aligns with President Museveni’s executive order focused on environmental protection.
He highlighted the illegality of establishing fish ponds and erecting structures in road reserves, emphasising that such activities will not be tolerated.
Ms. Catherine Musiita, the Masindi District Physical Planner, underscored the importance of residents adhering to areas designated by the Physical Planning Unit.
Settlements in road reserves and wetlands not only pose immediate environmental risks but also violate established laws.
The urgency of the evacuation was echoed by Mr William Nsimiire, the District Environment Officer for Masindi, who emphasised the fragile ecosystem of the area.
Protecting biodiversity and natural resources is a shared responsibility, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the ecosystem.
Residents have until Tuesday next week to comply with the evacuation order, and authorities are collaborating with community leaders to facilitate a swift and organised process.
The directive underscores the commitment to both immediate safety concerns and the preservation of the region’s ecosystem.
As Masindi faces the aftermath of River Kafu’s overflow, the evacuation becomes a crucial step in mitigating further risks and safeguarding the well-being of the affected communities.
