UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has closed Senana Supermarket along Buganda Road temporarily for product inspection, citing a contravention of laws regarding the sale of certain items.
UNBS inspectors conducted a field visit, engaging with the supermarket’s management to address concerns about their product offerings.
According to UNBS, the closure is in line with its mandate under the UNBS Act Cap 327 to enforce standards and ensure the public is protected from consuming dangerous or sub-standard products.
The act explicitly prohibits the importation, manufacture, sale, distribution, or holding for sale of any product that doesn’t meet compulsory Uganda standards.
Additionally, the UNBS (Inspection & Clearance) Regulation 2022 requires all imported products to undergo UNBS inspection and clearance before being released to the market.
Senana Supermarket is said to have violated the law by releasing a container from a bonded warehouse without the necessary UNBS inspection and clearance.
The standards body emphasised that Senana is cooperating, and once the inspection is completed, and the products meet Uganda’s compulsory standards, the supermarket will be reopened.
This temporary closure is not the first challenge for Senana Supermarket. A few years ago, it faced financial issues, leading to a caveat being placed on the business due to its failure to service a bank loan.
The recent closure is part of UNBS’s ongoing efforts to uphold product standards and ensure consumer safety in the marketplace.
