UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | City business magnate and tycoon Haruna Ssentongo found himself entangled in a legal battle over allegations of land grabbing, leading to his arrest by State House Land officials on December 23, 2023.
Ssentongo’s arrest stemmed from a protracted dispute involving him and Shamim Awaali Namusisi, a prominent figure and the female Youth Lord Councilor for KCCA, over a piece of land situated in Munyonyo.
The narrative unfolds as Ssentongo, in pursuit of the land, attempted various manoeuvres to secure the property at a minimal cost, which Namusisi vehemently opposed, resulting in escalating tensions.
The saga commenced when Ssentongo approached Namusisi expressing interest in acquiring her land located in Munyonyo.
Despite Ssentongo’s efforts, Namusisi adamantly refused to part with her property, prompting Ssentongo to enlist the assistance of Hussein Hudu, Namusisi’s husband and the RCC for Masaka, to facilitate the transaction.
Background Story
In 2022, a pivotal meeting took place at the Fairway Hotel in Kampala, where Ssentongo, Hudu, and Namusisi convened to negotiate the sale of the land.
During the meeting, Namusisi purportedly disclosed that she would sell the plot of land to Ssentongo for Ugx 300 million.
However, Ssentongo’s immediate access to Ugx 300 million in cash rendered him unable to fulfil Namusisi’s financial demands as he had only Ugx30m in cash.
Within a twist of events, it is further learned that Namusisi rejected the available Ugx30m and departed from the negotiation, thus leaving Ssentongo and her husband Hudu in discussion.
This Ugx30m is said to have been just a commitment fee, and in the end, Hudu Hussein left it at his home and kept it without any written agreement.
It was after some months that Ssentongo called to meet Shamim and her husband, and he was delivering only Ugx100m but still, Shamim rejected it as she wanted the whole amount of Ugx300m at once.
Consequently, things took a different turn when Shamim called Ssentongo the next day to collect his commitment fee of Ugx30m.
Close sources to Shamim allege that Haruna deliberately refused to pick the money. Frustrated by the impasse, Ssentongo allegedly resorted to coercive tactics, including threats, to acquire the land forcefully which they refused to sell to him.
In November 2023, Haruna reportedly went and forcefully fenced off the land with the help of security forces.
In response, Hudu Hussein and Namusisi initiated legal proceedings against Ssentongo, resulting in his apprehension by State House Land officials.
Following his arrest, Ssentongo was released under the condition that he refrained from the contested land.
Attempts to reach out to the property tycoon Ssentongo for a comment on this were futile.
