Ugandan and Ethiopian Engineers Partner in Construction

UGANDA, Kampala Real Muloodi NewsUgandan and Ethiopian engineers have united to announce a partnership which aims to improve profitability and productivity of the construction sector in the two respective countries.

Under that partnership, Uganda and Ethiopia will share knowledge, experience and expertise.

The partnership formation was revealed during a virtual seminar last month, organised by the Ethiopian Embassy and the Uganda National Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors (UNABCEC).

During the seminar, themed ‘Building Capacity through Partnership to Enhance Regional Competitiveness,’ experts from the two countries discussed how to maximise expansion into East Africa’s construction sector through partnerships.

The Ethiopian Ambassador to Uganda, Alemtsehay Meseret, who was also present at the seminar, said that partnerships and sharing of knowledge, information and experiences will improve the construction sector in Ethiopia and Uganda.

“In the last couple of years, Ethiopia has embarked on grant construction works, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) for which the construction sector has been progressing well and capacitated local companies with knowledge, finance and experience in the sector,” Ambassador Meseret said.

“In this regard, local companies in Ethiopia and Uganda and other countries in East Africa should combine their knowledge, expertise and resources to capacitate themselves to emerge competitive in the region and beyond,” she added.

James Olonya, the president of UNABEC, acknowledged that partnerships contribute immensely toward infrastructural growth.

“Partnership and construction sector plays a very important role to realise national agenda such as industrialisation for inclusive growth and sustainable wealth creation plus strengthening local contractors to be competitive in the region,” Olonya said.

Micheal Moses Odongo, the Commissioner of Construction Standards Quality Management at the Ministry of Works and Transport of Uganda, revealed that the construction sector is a big business in Uganda.

He added that partnership creation is vital on such a platform to create opportunities in the region, thus boosting the sector’s potential for quality delivery.

He added that partnerships will help East Africa compete regionally and internally.

“East African Countries in construction need partnership to build capacity and to enhance regional competitiveness,” he said.

Esaw Maza, the head of Business Development Affairs at the Ethiopia Construction Works Corporation, revealed the corporation’s potential areas of engagement and the capital to the parties.

He noted that the corporation developed much potential and experience through working and engaging in various construction areas such as water and dam infrastructure, road and railroad infrastructure, real estate development and housing construction, plus producing construction input for the company itself.

He also revealed the corporation’s interest to partner with companies working in the sector in East Africa, including Uganda.
