UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | The Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) is seeking government support to acquire land for the construction of a new showground in the greater Kampala metropolitan area.

This request comes as the current showground in Nakawa, Kampala, faces space constraints due to ongoing construction projects by UMA members.

During the opening of the 29th annual Uganda International Trade Fair, Mr. Deo Kiyemba, the UMA chairperson, highlighted the pressing need for a new showground.

UMA, which began with 26 members in 1992, has now grown to encompass 1504 members, with more joining regularly.

To accommodate this expansion, UMA envisions a state-of-the-art showground featuring five-star hotels, modern showrooms, and warehouses that meet international standards.

Mr Kiyemba emphasised that improved warehousing facilities would not only benefit UMA members but also boost exports, ultimately driving growth in the manufacturing sector.

He called upon the government to provide approximately 60 acres of land to initiate this ambitious project.

Additionally, Mr Kiyemba urged caution regarding land allocation in wetlands, citing the example of the Namamve industrial park.

Part of this park was deemed unsuitable for development by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) due to its wetland status.

The Vice President, Ms. Jessica Alupo, who represented President Museveni as the chief guest, assured manufacturers of government support in finding markets for their products.

She commended Ugandan entrepreneurs for their spirit of enterprise, resilience, and innovation, noting the significant presence of over 1,000 exhibitors at this year’s trade fair.

Ms. Alupo emphasised the collective conviction that Uganda can and will continue to thrive in the business and manufacturing sectors.
