Yumbe Official Arrested for Alleged Bribery to Get Construction Contract

UGANDA, Yumbe | Real Muloodi News | The Anti-Corruption Unit in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate of Uganda apprehended Kana Taban, a Senior Procurement Officer (SPO) of Yumbe District, and Anule Siraj of Miribe Foundation Limited.

The arrest which took place on Wednesday 20th December 2023 is linked to allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe amounting to UGX23 million.

The alleged bribery scheme involved Kana Taban soliciting a substantial sum from Obua Emmanuel, the Managing Director of Apogee Logistics company.

The solicitation was purportedly connected to the awarding of a contract for the construction of the Ibizi water shed culvert and the rehabilitation of the 4.3km Abiriamajo Yangani access road for the fiscal year 2022/2023.

The intricate details of the scandal unfold as the bribe, amounting to UGX23 million, was reportedly funnelled through a bank account held by Miribe Foundation Limited.

Anule Siraj, identified as the account signatory, executed the withdrawal and subsequently delivered the funds to the Senior Procurement Officer.

The ongoing investigations have already yielded results, with UGX20 million recovered from the suspects. Both Kana Taban and Anule Siraj are presently detained at Arua Central Police Station, where further inquiries into the alleged bribery will take place.

The Senior Procurement Officer’s alleged misconduct raises concerns about the integrity of the bidding and contract awarding processes, crucial components in ensuring transparency, fairness, and efficiency in public projects.

The role of institutions such as the Anti-Corruption Unit and the Criminal Investigations Directorate is pivotal in uncovering and addressing corruption, safeguarding public funds, and maintaining the public’s trust in government systems.
