UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | Landscaping is a great way to add value to your home and to improve your living experience. A step up from just gardening, landscaping involves more than plants. It is about beautifying your compound with ornaments, furniture, lighting, and even adding a water-feature if you are so inclined.

Many homeowners hesitate to invest in landscaping when there are so many other home improvements to be done. However, landscaping on a budget doesn’t mean settling for an unattractive compound. It is possible to design great landscaping without breaking the bank.

Joshua Gwamoiza is a landscaping professional with Eco Mice Uganda, and he has some tips on getting a good job done without draining your wallet.

Partition the Job and Do It in Phases

Break up your landscape project to sections, and complete them in phases. You can do the front yard first, and then do the backyard when you have more funds available. You may want to start with planting the lawn first, followed by the walkway, plants, and so on. Work on the yard when money is available, pause when funds run out, and continue when you get more money, until the completion of the project.

“Here you can spend money on the best quality landscape rather than having a complete landscape with poor quality materials,” Gwamoiza tells.

When landscaping, resist the temptation of adapting to shortcuts. Low-price materials may be of inferior quality, and any savings you make will not be worth it in the end.

Design Big, Plant Small

When shopping for plants, save money by buying the smallest size they come in. “Small plants cost less. Make money by planting small and watching your home value grow along with your foliage,” says Cassy Aoyagi, president of FormLA Landscaping.

It is important to take note of the size the plant will grow to, so that you can invest in well-thought-out design to position each plant in a space where it can develop fully over time.

Hardscape Needn’t Break the Bank

Hardscape projects can be easier than beginners at first imagine. For instance, brick or stone patios laid in sand are easier to build for do-it-yourselfers than those laid in concrete.

By planning properly, it’s also possible in many cases to avoid having to cut any of the bricks, which can be a daunting task. Bypass the pricey pros and lay your own stone walkways in sand.

Make a Big Splash With a DIY Water Feature

Water features needn’t bust the budget in your yard. Modern pumps and pond liners are inexpensive and easy for do-it-yourselfers to install. Add some stones and with a little extra effort, you can even build a small waterfall or two. Scrounge around for free stones at construction sites (with permission) or on the property of your country cousin.  Water features can be easier than beginners at first imagine.

Install Your Own Dry-Stack Wall

Dry-stack walls make a great border to a garden bed, or can easily serve as a border, retainer, or simply a focal point in your garden or yard. While dry-stack walls are not held together in place by mortar, an evenly placed design of stones can supply sturdy edging to divide up sections of a garden with a natural design.

Keep in mind that a dry stack needs a small trench dug out for stability, and shouldn’t be higher than a few feet for safety.

Other Factors to Consider for a Beautiful Landscape.

Size

If you are thinking of landscaping, it is important to consider factors such as the size of your yard. The acreage will determine how much detail you can put into the project.

Theme

It would help if you also thought of a coherent theme for your yard. Some designers suggest you consider the size, shape and position of the house and choose a theme that is consistent with the house’s theme. You should also ask if you want neat shapes, lines, or curves.

Consider who will use the yard and how your landscaping design facilitates the use and enjoyment of the compound. Link the different spaces of the yard to enable people to move from one area to another without having to leap over the grass.
