Considerations for Designing your Kitchen

UGANDA, Kampala | Real Muloodi News | For many people, one of the most exciting parts of the building is getting a new kitchen. Considering how much time we spend on them, this is not surprising. The kitchen is an important space, and planning for it is worth the time to ensure it functions comfortably and efficiently.

While you want your kitchen to look visually attractive, you also want it conducive for cooking and food preparation. When planning for the kitchen, here are some of the key factors to consider:

Layout

The initial step to consider is to set the kitchen layout before you even get into every detail. Layout entails where to position the kitchen’s major components, such as the kitchen sink, countertop, fridge, table, and chairs.

The whole layout should look structured and streamlined. You don’t want it cluttered. By doing so, you can be sure of the functionality and efficiency of your kitchen construction.

Cabinet

When designing a kitchen, choosing the right cabinets can be daunting. There are different cabinet styles, colours, and materials from which to choose. The cabinet doors are among the first things visitors notice in your kitchen, so they should make a positive impact!

Kitchen cabinets are also very important for storage in your kitchen. Wall cabinets come in various heights, so ensure you press them at the right height where you can reach the shelves.

Hardware

Hardware for the kitchen refers to the jewellery for the cabinets. It can be big, shiny, simple or understated.

Hardware cabinets can also help you say whether your cabinetry is modern or traditional. Cabinet hardware is not a requirement. Just think about who will use the kitchen regularly and what works best for them. Also, if you are planning to use this house far into your golden years, ensure you pick something that will work for ageing hands. Handles or pulls work much better than knobs.

Countertops

Today, the countertop options on the market are too many to list. As you are considering products to buy, ensure they fit your needs.

What to consider about countertop design: can you afford to seal the product annually? If it scratches, are you able to fix it? How do you clean it?

Remember that budget plays the biggest role in the decision you make. If the budget is tight, you can include small tiles of marble or granite to pull in the countertop colour without being bored with a panel of granite that extends up from the countertop.

Sink/faucet

Choosing a faucet is tricky because of the variety of styles, materials and finishes-and prices on the market. There are some key points to consider when choosing a faucet.

The height and reach of faucet spouts differ. For instance, a tall spout may not fit if you have a shelf above the sink, whereas, with a three-bowl kitchen sink, one with a short reach may not reach all the bowls.

If you do not wish for a faucet that drips, get one with ceramic valves. And the best part is that faucets with ceramic valves cost almost the same as other faucets.

During faucet finishes, choose a finishing that matches nearby hardware, and towel bars, among others. Mismatches in the kitchen can look bad.

Most faucets have polished chrome, satin nickel or bronze, all of which are durable.

Pull-down sprayers are more reliable and great for the kitchen sink than a “side” sprayer (a spray handle mounted in the sink).

As for the sink, although in some kitchens it is an afterthought, it’s a good idea to choose one at the same time as the cabinetry underneath the sink area to avoid a mismatch.

Keep in mind that they often installed the sink before the countertops. If you spent a lot of money on a beautiful countertop, don’t compromise on the sink.

If an under-mount sink needs to be changed sooner rather than later, a contractor may have to remove the entire countertop, which is a pricey and nasty job.

Backsplash

Cooking delicious meals is the sign of a loved kitchen. However, any cook knows there is a price to pay for that tasty dinner or when the time comes to clean up. Oil splatters and sauce spills behind the stove can take a heavy toll on painted walls!

It is, therefore, attractive and easy to clean the tile backsplash behind the stove!

Countertops often dictate the backsplash colour and style. The tiles you pick to design the wall between the countertop and the cabinets should complement the colour scheme and theme. Ultimately, the backsplash serves as a centre point. It’s also a chance to be creative.

Lighting

The lighting in the kitchen is crucial as it creates the perfect ambience for your kitchen space. Set the mood of your kitchen with the right lighting. Besides the mood, different light sources will help you cook and prepare your food safely. You might incorporate ambient lighting for the entire room or add pendants for lighting enhancement.

Flooring

The flooring of the kitchen is one part that should not be taken for granted. Mostly because improper flooring can compromise the safety of your family. Go for lighter and safer flooring materials. Light materials give your kitchen a bright and airy feeling, allowing you to spot spills and other potential hazards on the floor.

Storage

Turning a cluttered kitchen into a clean and tidy place requires careful planning. For kitchen ideas, efficient kitchen storage should be your top priority – after all, no one wants a cluttered kitchen.

Since the kitchen is used to perform a variety of roles, such as family dining, relaxing, working and entertaining, a well-designed layout and ample storage are more necessary than ever.

While planning to design your kitchen, put enough cabinets for the unused plates, appliances etc. Enough storage makes the kitchen look organised and less cluttered.

Appliances

Appliances, alone, do not make a kitchen, but they just might be the most important aspect. After all, the kitchen’s primary function is for preparing and cooking meals.

Standard appliances include refrigerators, cooktops, dishwashers, warming drawers, steamers, and several products from which you can choose. If you have a big family, you can go with commercial-size appliances or get apartment-size appliances if it is a small family. If your pockets allow, get the appliances you need and want.

There are so many extra details that you can bring into your new kitchen that it’s hard to choose. Additional design considerations include crown moulding, columns and faux door panels. These options can be a beautiful addition. Just ensure that they fit your budget as well.
